There have also been some interesting comments on my Facebook page, where my blog posts automatically get imported as notes. I'm reproducing them in full (names withheld):

I saw that too and was pondering the exact same things, albeit without your sense of proactiveness about finding out more. When he first said "Bathurst", I didn't even know he was talking about somewhere in Australia. In fact, even aft...er they mentioned "Australia", it took me a little while to cotton on they were talking about. Loved the VW ads though :D

Gamilaraay: murrumay 'lightning'...
also I think malu is 'testicles' in the South West (no long vowel though....)

...which would also be perfectly appropriate...

my thoughts exactly...

:D someone should let the Top Gear people know.

Even though Bathurst is in Wiradjuri country, I doubt this is a link to 'Maloo'. And I doubt that GMH would have got into respelling or flipping through Science of Man. My guess is that the trail is mediated by some of those (once?) popular "Aboriginal names" books, but I'm not looking through them.
The spelling does leads us (via AIATSIS Library's online exhibition) to "Wind maloo" in Curr's list No. 4 - Raffles Bay : The Unalla tribe by Paul Foelsche, and one can Google to various repetitions of the ute's moniker as being "Aboriginal" for variously 'thunder', 'storm' or 'wind'.

Also Worimi/Gadhang Marloo 'lightning' (Science of Man 1899, October, p165)
