Since installing the self-hosted WordPress.org software, I’ve had a few days of fiddling around with some of the features of the css stylesheet and the various php scripts that control this blog and, all in all, I’m impressed with what I’ve been able to do with it.
First and foremost, all those purty pictures that used to adorn the header of my blog, the ones that would change whenever I got bored of them, are now on a randomiser. So every time you reload, you’ll see a different image.
Secondly, I’ve integrated gravatars - globally recognised avatars - pretty much everywhere. So unless you want your comments to be illustrated with an anonymous-looking silhouette, you should go and get yourself a free gravatar.
Thirdly, as soon as you start writing a comment, you’ll notice a live preview underneath the comment box. It’ll even show your gravatar off to the side, if you have one. The live preview will interpret any licit html tags you want to include and will output exactly what will appear after you hit ‘submit’, so now you won’t have to email me and ask me to fix up your erroneous formatting tags.
Lastly, I’ve gone and got myself a Creative Commons license, and if you scroll to the bottom of the page, you’ll see the image and link to the license in the footer. This is just to give me a bit of legal basis next time my posts get ‘content-scraped’ without attribution, and realistically, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
I just hope you enjoy using it as much as I’ve enjoyed customising it.

Wowie! That’s a lot of technical know-how you’ve got going on here! Tell me, do you know of a GOOD site meter that works with WordPress? I LOVED Sitemeter on Blogger, but I hated Blogger and Sitemeter doesn’t get along with WordPress. I miss all the cool information that Sitemeter gave me and I’m hoping to find something comparable.

HEY! I went to Gravitar and signed up – why can’t you see my iris? What didn’t I do – or, more likely, what did I do wrong?

‘Fraid I don’t, MrsChili. I had sitemeter a while ago but there were large discrepancies between the wordpress stats page and the sitemeter statistics.
I don’t know what you’re doing wrong. The gravatar is attached to your email address, or, to an md5 checksum created from your email address. You can use this page to check whether your email address generates a gravatar or not. Failing that, I don’t know, log back in and double check your details?

Glad you got it all lookin’ good! I just changed you on my blogroll and RSS feed.
I use google analytics on my wordpress blog to get my stats, works fine for me.

Hey thanks for that Kim, I’ve always noticed waiting for analytics.google.com popping up in my status bar in Firefox while going to just about any page, so either it’s really popular, or Google are tracking absolutely everything. It looks alright though, and I’ve just signed up.

Okay – let’s see if THIS works: it appears I missed the confirmation step at Gravitar.
Also, I just signed up for Google Analytics. I haven’t got any data from it yet, though – we”ll see how that goes.

Hey – now WAIT a second. When I’m typing this, I see the little confirmation box below me, and it’s got my pretty iris avatar on it, but when I hit “submit,” I get the anonymous shadow. I’m blaming it on you!

But Mrs Chili, I’m gettin’ your iris. Retrospectively too; your comments above have their gravatar as well.
You can blame me now, since it works. Annoyingly though, there’s a bug in the comment preview script, meaning that I can’t preview my own comments when I’m signed in.
