Thanks Jangari, it's ironic how the reasoning behind each issue has emerged. As one political commentator remarked last week (I think it was on Breakfast with Fran Kelly), 'how Mr Howard could bring that concept up from the back of his mind in terms of linking the stolen generations debate is beyond a lot of people, his opponents would have been laughing in their chairs' (or something along those lines). I would think it is a significant mistake but will have to wait for the numbers this week.

Right John. The more he talks, the more it becomes clear that they accept or avoid responsibility whenever it suits them. Also, this in context with Costello's plainly weird assertion that interest rates are good because they show how gangbusters the economy is going, shows that they're making it up as they go along.

One would have to have one's head planted firmly beneath a foot of sand to still believe in this government's honesty.

I've attached your url to your first comment, by the way.

John Howard's refusal to 'apologise' in the context of taking responsibility over increased interest rates is phenomenal given the facts of the previous Liberal election campaign, particularly that he explicitly took responsibility for a strong economy just a few days ago (I'm not an economist but from my readings there is a link between the way this Government has handled the economy and the inflation causing higher rates).

Nonetheless, the link between his reasoning in terms of this situation and the situation of Indigenous peoples affected by past removal policies is now more circumspect given that more people will feel the personal impact.

I have no doubt that part of Howard's justification for his stance in relation to the Indigenous issue is the need to project more 'decisive', 'stern', and 'strong' emotions.
