Pre-Colonial Writing?

Taken directly from Column 8 today (15/5):

“Sir,” writes Timothy Sparks, of Cudal, which is always a promising start, “I grew up in Talgarra Place, Beacon Hill, and when the street sign was replaced with a nice new one, reading ‘Talgara Pl’, a neighbour reported this spelling error to Warringah Shire Council, only to be informed that ‘that was the way the Aborigines spelt it’.”

One wonders what they were thinking, but one can’t help giggling, can one?

No, this is the entire piece. It isn’t their style to do anything but let the absurdity speak for itself.

You know, with a change of tense, the statement would change from the absurd:

‘that was the way the Aborigines spelt it’

to the formidable:

‘that is the way the Aborigines spell it’

I rarely comment on my own pieces, but am chuffed to find this humourous true story lifted from Column 8 and given another chance of being laughed at.
