It looks as though I’ll be heading back out to the field in about three months for a couple more months of fieldwork in the middle of bolwo-gin, the windy season (literally, ‘wind’-genitive), which is almost the best time to be there, second only to the wet.
This time though, I won’t have the ever-looming prospect of having to produce a thesis at the end of it, so the research might take a slightly different tack.
I can’t wait!

Yes, it is.
By the way, I think I’ll be seeing a lot more footy this time round, Wamut.

In what capacity are you going back to the field? Are you a student again after honours?

Nah, no academic responsibilities whatsoever.
The grant expires at the end of this year and there’s no other good use to put the money towards, so we (the principal investigator; my supervisor, and I) thought we should use it up by answering a lot of questions that my thesis asked.
Also, if I’m going to do a Ph.D. it’d be good to get as many more hours of recordings as I can before starting.
And, at the end of the day, my graduating is not a good enough reason to stop working on a language.
Wamut, that sounds good. I’ll be ya Adriana!

“And, at the end of the day, my graduating is not a good enough reason to stop working on a language.”
I couldn’t agree more. Although I’m still studying, my Chinese professor explained to the class that his philosophy was to teach us to become independant learners, so to speak, ‘because language acquisition is a life-long pursuit’.
Good luck with the trip.

Or another way of putting it:
It worked for Anthony Burgess didn’t it?

Wamut as Burgo? Jangari as Adriana?
That’s enough to get me to the footy in Katherine!
